Archangel Quiz
So there's a meme going around about the Belief-O-Matic Quiz, which I don't want to do because the questions are so very vague. But then they had another quiz which was the Which Archangel Are You? Quiz.

This was intriguing to me because I've been taking a seminar on John Milton, and most of it has been studying Paradise Lost, in which two of the four archangels are major characters.

Well, my result on the quiz was Raphael, which made me happy, because he's pretty much my favorite character in Paradise Lost, and because one of my dearest friends is named Raphael, so I feel connected to the name, at any rate.

I rad that page on the archangels, and for some reason I always thought Lucifer was the fourth archangel. Am I completely delusional? (I've never even heard of Uriel.)

I like Raphael, too. The Book of Tobit is my favorite book of the Bible. Any story where an angel both restores someone's sight and banishes demons with fish parts gets a thumbs up from me.

Hmmm...I don't know if you're completely delusional, but I remember once having this conversation with Doug about who's the fourth archangel (I don't even remember when, but years ago), and he said he thought it was Lucifer as well, so ... I guess if you're completely delusional, so are we ;) And Uriel didn't make it into the canon or even the deutero-canon, so it's not surprising that you haven't heard of him (he's a minor character in Paradise Lost, though).

Interestingly, while I had heard of the Book of Tobit before I took the Milton seminar, I hadn't read it and didn't really know anything about it. Next year I'm going to resolve to read the whole Bible; I tried it once and then got distracted or discouraged or something, but it's something I really feel that I should do. Being an Idealist, I base a lot of my personal faith on intuition, but on the occasions when I've felt it necessary to defend my personal faith to other people who know the Bible really well, I've felt unprepared to do so, and as an English major there's really no need for that (nor an excuse).

Reading the whole Bible is quite a task. I tried it once; I liked Genesis and Exodus, struggled through Leviticus, and gave up halfway through Numbers. After that I just skipped around and read the parts I thought were interesting, mostly the Apocrypha.

Honestly, you don't have to read the actual Book of Tobit; just read this summary, and you've got the general idea. :)

Well, the guy who edited my Milton book summarized it in the PL footnotes, and it was pretty cool.

I've heard it recommended that you should read one chapter a day and that's a good way to do it, so I think I'll try that and see how it goes.

I definitely want to read all the Apocrypha/Deutero-canon, though, because otherwise what's the point of having a separate Bible from the Protestants?

Well, there are other reasons; the NAB is scholarly and non-sexist, so those are good reasons too, but from all I've heard of the Deutero-canon there are some good stories in there.
