On the one hand, I'm glad to hear that the NCAA has taken a stand against offensive mascots. Still...so much time, energy and money wasted over something that should be obvious to anyone with an ounce of decency or compassion. It never ceases to amaze me. And how particularly ironic that, a mere ten years ago, someone got the bright idea that North Dakota should re-brand itself as simply "Dakota." You'll consider changing the name of your whole state, but you'll actively block the change of an individual school's mascot? Also, I should be happy that their governor has apparently seen the light (or at least a reflection of it) but I'm so disgusted with him for signing such a bill in the first place.
I've never understood the reluctance and/or open hostility toward changing offensive school mascots, but then I never really identified with any of my school mascots anyway. When I was getting ready to go to grad school, people said that I was going from a wolf to a coyote, and I was genuinely confused as to what they were talking about: "What? Since when am I a species of canine? ...oh, now I get it."
