So, as I was watching this sketch yesterday, I suddenly remembered it from when I was a little kid. It's such a joy to rediscover these old Sesame Street sketches that have been buried so deeply in my subconscious as to be virtually forgotten.
What a great performance by Jim Henson in this sketch, and what terrifically clever writing! The one-sided phone conversation is done so much more realistically than the one we did last week, and even though you can't hear Bert (until the end), you can usually tell from Ernie's responses what he must be saying. One exception is when Ernie calls the second time and says, "Hey Bert, it's Ernie again ... yes, thank you." And yet, it makes for a funny non sequitur.
Nowadays, of course, Ernie could just e-mail Bert and text him and probably tweet about being thirsty and post it on Facebook. Call me a Luddite if you will, but I think the old-fashioned way makes for a funnier sketch.
With that said, I do have to say that it is nothing short of miraculous to me that I can now call up practically any Sesame Street and/or Muppet sketch I want to, at any time that I want to. What I wouldn't have given in the late '80s to be able to filter out all the boring parts of a Sesame Street episode, (i.e., all the letter-and-number stuff that I had long since mastered), and be able to watch just the funny, Muppety bits.
