First, a brief history of this journal. This journal came about in late 2002-early 2003 when the current president was pushing to invade Iraq. I believed, and still believe, that this was a terrible idea and so, inspired by the novel Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, I began this journal in the hopes that my views on the subject might make it out into the world and influence public opinion and the opinions of those who shape policy.

Needless to say, that didn't happen. But it made me feel a little bit better anyway. As time went on, I included other topics of political or social significance. In the past two years or so I've gotten away from that because I had temporarily sold my soul to the graduate program in English at the University of South Dakota, and so have had very little time to think of such matters, let alone to synthesize my thoughts so that they are logical and presentable. (Besides, there didn't seem to be much point, since Jon Stewart and the other Daily Show writers were expressing my feelings much more intelligently, succinctly, and hilariously than I ever could).

Now, having finished my graduate coursework (though still having a thesis to write) my soul is once more my own and I have the luxury of thinking and writing for the sheer pleasure of doing so. Yet once again, the focus of the journal has shifted. From now on (or until I change my mind again), this journal will be dedicated to introspective and quasi-philosophical reflections on any subject that (pre)occupies my mind long enough for me to string together a few coherent thoughts on it. A lot of them will probably have to do with books and/or movies and the analysis thereof, because that is one the ways I'm best able to make sense of the world. Whether I have that quality because I'm an English major or I'm an English major because I have that quality, I haven't quite figured out yet.

One of my most fundamental beliefs is that everyone is equal, and one of my constant endeavors is to treat everyone equally. While I try not to be sexist, I also try to be concise, so whenever you encounter the word he* in my journal, assume that the "or she" is implied. That goes for all other male third-person pronouns followed by a star as well.

Welcome to the world as I see it.
