YoB&E: Day 216--Penguin adventure

Well, it finally decided to be winter around here, with snow and single-digit temperatures and windchills and the whole shebang. It's just as well; we were getting spoiled by the comparatively warm temperatures, I suppose. Anyway, so that I can remind myself that things could be worse, today Bert & Ernie go on an adventure to Antarctica.

(To skip the theme song.)

For all of Bert's bragging that he speaks bird languages, Ernie seems to be a lot better at interpreting the penguin's communication.

The "taxi" thing is kind of a running gag. I don't think it's as funny as they seem to think it is. What do you think?

This sketch is actually kind of dark, if you think about it. It's not very often on Sesame Street when someone is placed into mortal peril, albeit temporarily. Also, it raises the question of what happened to the real papa penguin?

With that said, there's a lot of humor and cuteness as well. This is one of my favorites of the Great Adventures. And boy, the animators sure put a lot of effort into these things. Look at Ernie's hair blowing in the wind from under his hat. It's such a tiny detail that most people probably wouldn't even bother with, but it adds so much!
