'The one fixed point in a changing age'

Forty-five years ago today, a group of people led by a woman named Joan Ganz Cooney gave a gift to the entire world. It was a children's TV show called Sesame Street, but it was so much more. It was--and continues to be--a beacon of light and hope in a dark and turbulent time.

About six months ago, the nonprofit organization that Joan Ganz Cooney cofounded 45 years ago put together this lovely tribute to her:

There are no words to express what Sesame Street means to me, how deeply it has touched my heart, how profoundly it has enriched my life. Thus, there's nothing more for me to say but thanks.

Thank you, Joan. Thank you for the joy and the comfort. Thank you for the songs and the sharing. Thank you for the laughter and the tears.

Thank you for my childhood.
